Our close friend and Nepal correspondent, David Mendies, welcomed us to Nepal in 2004. Our time with David, celebrating his wedding, introduced us to a new level of culture and beauty with the smells, smiles and extraordinary Himalayan reputation. Once the Mendies had shared all the corners of the Kathmandu valley they began to entice my brothers and I to begin dreaming of investing in their emerging textile industry. With Nepal’s history of instability we never truly entertained contributing to Nepal’s economic revival. Yet our dreams were revisited in May of 2009. A mutual friend introduced us to Michael Daube, the Executive Director of Citta International. When we heard of Citta’s Nepalese knitting cooperative we expected something between quirky croqueted crafts and a sympathetic slogan.
